Pelvic Organ Prolapse

This is defined as the descent of one or more of the pelvic organs due to increased intra abdominal pressure.  Organs that can prolapse are the uterus, bladder, and rectum.

The reasons for prolapse are a combination of multiple factors; a few causes are listed below:

  • Weak abdominal wall
  • Postural changes in the low back and mid back
  • Multiple vaginal deliveries—difficult deliveries, complicated labour, use of forceps, significant tear
  • General medical problems with constipation/bowel, post hysterectomy, heavy lifting, or obesity.
